Leadership

Leading when no one is watching

October 20, 2026 · 2 min read

We usually notice leaders on a stage, but leadership is formed in places no one sees: the late night study session, the group chat, the moment you could take a shortcut.

Jesus said in Luke 16:10 that whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much. The small things are not a warm-up. They are the training ground.

Start with your word. If you say you will show up, show up. If you make a mistake, say so quickly and make it right. People follow leaders whose private life matches their public one.

Then practise serving where there is no applause. Set up the chairs, clean the room, text the person who was left out. A leader who is willing to do the unseen work earns trust that a title never could.

Finally, stay accountable. Invite two or three people to ask you the hard questions regularly. Integrity is rarely lost in one big moment; it is protected by honest friends along the way.

Try this week: do one act of service this week that nobody will see or thank you for.
